A Padawan, or more formally known as Padawan Learner, is a student taken on by a master.  It is somewhat like a relationship in the medieval times when there were apprenticeships.  The best way to understand a Padawan-Master relationship is to observe one.  As above I have used Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi above to display the relationship.

A Padawan is quite submissive to his master, though this does not mean that they are slaves.  Padawan Learners are there to pick up on their master's wisdom, intellect, and knowledge of the force.  If a good relationship is struck, then a friendship will be found, as is Quin-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship.

A Padawan is to respect all Master of the Jedi, and to listen to what they say carefully.  Even when one is a master themselves they listen to their peers.  A Padawan is not to question his master, but to discover why they do things a certain way.  During their time together, the master must pay close attention to his Padawan.  The master must judge unbiased wether or not they are ready to become a Jedi Knight, or if they are leaning to close to the Dark Force.

If you wish to go according to the book series "Jedi Apprentice" (Currently only 2 books out right now), they will teach you a lot about the time spent training in the temple, and the ways of the Padawan.  So say the books, a temple student must be chosen to become a Padawan Learner by his or her 13 birthday.  If they are not chosen, they are delegated to another field of study where their training will serve them well.  As it so happens, Obi-Wan almost became a farmer on a small mining world, because Qui-Gon did not want to take another student.  It is a very good series that I recommend to people who are more interested in the Jedi.
